Crisp air, golden leaves, pumpkin-spice everything…fall in L.A. might be more sunshine than sweater weather, but it’s still the dreamiest time for family photos.
Mini sessions book fast, and the best way to enjoy yours is to show up relaxed and ready. Here’s your go-to guide to make it easy—short, fun, and packed with pro tips—How to Prepare for Fall Mini Sessions.
1. Prep Your Crew (a.k.a. Big Kids & Little Kids)
Everyone needs to know: Relax and have fun. Truly, that’s the only rule.
Keep the hype low. Just tell the kids, “We’re meeting Miss Maggie for some playtime with her camera.” Skip anything about “best behavior” or “perfect smiles.” That pressure makes kids clam up—or go wild.
Trust the process. Chaos is my creative playground. I know how to turn giggles, wiggles, and even meltdowns into magic.
(And no, you don’t need to practice poses. That’s my job.)
2. To Bribe or Not to Bribe?
We’ve all been tempted—Ice cream if you smile!—but early bribery often backfires. Kids get laser-focused on the treat and forget to just be.
If we decide a little sweetener will help, we’ll introduce it at the very end for that final “ta-da!” shot.
3. Pack a Tiny Emergency Kit
For babies & toddlers – A favorite noisemaking toy (for attention-grabbing close-ups)
Tissues or wipes (hello, runny noses)
Optional: a neutral sweater or light jacket in case SoCal weather decides to surprise us
That’s it. Simple.
4. Dress for Comfort and Camera Love
The right outfits make your photos pop—and keep everyone happy. Here’s the quick formula:
-
-
Comfort first. Everyone should be able to run, jump, and twirl. Skip scratchy sweaters or shoes that pinch.
-
Coordinate, don’t clone. Pick 2–3 colors. Start with your outfit, Mom (you deserve it), then build the family palette around it.
-
Contrast the background. Think jewel tones—plum, navy, mustard, burnt orange, burgundy—plus soft neutrals. Avoid colors that disappear into nature (no forest-green in the forest).
-
Add layers & details. Scarves, vests, bows, suspenders—tiny touches elevate a look.
-
Plan for weather mood swings. Light layers are key. You can peel or pile as temps change.

5. Footwear Matters
Outdoor locations can mean dirt paths and uneven ground.
Bring walking shoes or flats and, if you like, heels to slip on just for the photos.
Little ones will have more fun if they can actually move in their shoes (closed toes > dainty sandals).
6. Above All, Have Fun
Fall mini sessions are fast, lighthearted, and perfect for holiday cards or a seasonal refresh of your gallery wall.
If you arrive ready to play and laugh, I’ll capture the natural smiles and connections you’ll love for years!
