Five Mantras to Help You Survive Your Family Portrait Session

Have you ever found a quote or saying that just sticks with you? Maybe it inspires and motivates you. Or makes you think. Or is so funny you have to write it down so you don’t forget.

Maybe you’ve gone so far as to put it on an index card or post-it note and carry it around so that it can become a mantra that you commit to memory.

One of our favorite mantras is: “The days are long but the years are short.”

It is the reminder that the time you have with your kids at any age is fleeting. It is the reminder to always live in the moment – to be intentional about spending time together making memories. Even on what may seem like the longest of days, it’s best to relax and soak it all in. And sometimes, it’s necessary to freeze a moment in time to save it as a memory for later. This is why we do what we do – it’s our passion.

And believe it or not, mantras are also good for family portrait sessions! While these mantras may not be life-changing, they will help you keep your cool when the kids may not be on their best behavior or if your husband isn’t completely into an afternoon of smiling and posing. And they will help you get through your family portrait session successfully.

Slowly, repeat after me …

“Maggie has seen worse kids than mine.”

You may think to yourself, “Why this afternoon, of all afternoons, have my kids’ alter egos decided to make an appearance?”

But truth be told, Maggie has seen it all. And what you may think is “less than perfect” behavior is not bad at all! In fact, it’s perfect for her to capture your family’s sweet and hilarious moments.

“We only have to hold still for a minute.”

Maggie only needs you to smile or hold still for 100th of a second. That’s just long enough for her to click her shutter! So don’t worry about telling your kids (or husband) to be on their best behavior. And while it may not seem like they are cooperating, Maggie is getting the images she needs to highlight your unique family dynamic.

One of the best compliments she’s received was from a husband who, initially, wasn’t so sure about family portrait sessions. Once he saw the photographs, he exclaimed, “I can’t believe the moment you captured in the middle of all of that chaos!”

“I trust my photographer. Maggie’s got this!”

The easiest thing you can do is let Maggie do what she does best! She’s there to tell your family’s story. Let her guide the shoot and be in control of your kiddos.

If she’s struggling, she will ask you for help. But if not, then trust that she’s getting the shots she needs to capture the spirit of your family. Trust her to capture these timeless memories.

“I will relax and enjoy myself.”

The best thing you can do is relax and have fun with your kids and husband. Don’t worry about how you look or how your kids are behaving. Just go with the flow! Maggie pays attention to the intricate details and will showcase your relationships with your kids, freezing those precious moments in time, and making sure you look gorgeous!

“My husband will live through this.”

Your husband may feel awkward or complain, but we promise you that he’ll survive. We’ll even let you in on a little secret: men are self-conscious and concerned about how they look too! So for your family portrait session let your husband know that he won’t have to be stiff or posed. Instead, he’ll be able to be natural, move around, play with your kids, and just be himself so that he will never have to feel awkward or unnatural during your session.

And once the session is over, we know how happy he’ll be when he has those timeless memories hanging on the walls of your home!
